Lately, I’ve been on TikTok, scrolling to find inspiration on what I could journal about. I realize that in another life, I could’ve been any of those creators—the video editing, the content ideas, the confidence of being in front of the camera. Realistically, I could do any of those. So what’s stopping me?

I want to be more creative, and I do believe I have a lot to say—things that some people might even agree with. And it feels so much easier than journaling about it. Don’t get me wrong, journaling is also fun, but with videos and visuals, I could add pictures and reference other videos. Maybe it just takes too much effort?

  1. people asking when i’ll be back in kl (girl… when i have a job)
  2. planning ahead (i’m unemployed, i’m not even sure i can survive today)
  3. seeing people get married (unjustified)
  4. seeing people travel (should be me fr)
  5. when men ask what i do for work (being unemployed is embarrassing)
  6. explaining my situation to men i talk to (i rent in kl but i’m in jb… whatever man)
  7. happiness in general?? (give me a break)

i tried prying open the pomegranate but failed. i’ve never been good at it—you would know. this fruit has been sitting on the counter for a while now, and i’ve been subconsciously avoiding it. it reminds me too much of you.

it was your unspoken duty to pry them open for me. they were always too hard for me, but they were sweet, so i liked them. maybe too sweet. and we both know i’ve never been very good at holding onto things that are too sweet for me. just look at you, for instance.

when something is that hard and that sweet, you have to be careful not to break what matters.

i finally hear the crack of the outer shell. and then, just like that, the seeds scatter across the counter. i rush to wipe it off, but it stains. it seeps in, mixes with my tears.

and suddenly nothing is going right in my life—and you, forever stained too.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit this, but I’m not really a “music person,” and it definitely showed while I was reading this book. Sure, I listen to music and enjoy it, but only on a surface level. This book, however, dives deep into musical details I honestly couldn’t be bothered to understand. Even from a writer’s perspective, it didn’t give me much. Percy is undeniably a good writer (and songwriter), and she’s clearly passionate about music—enough to write about it despite her own insecurities about her talent. Maybe in another life I could’ve related to her, but not in this one.

Joe, on the other hand, was a loser from the beginning. I think we can all agree on that. He struggled in school, relied heavily on his long-term girlfriend just to get by, and although he had the trauma of losing his mother and dealing with his father’s alcoholism, he was still… a loser. And later on, possibly a cheater.

The story itself follows the familiar “will-they-won’t-they” romance trope, but it’s also more than that. It explores music, grief, alcoholism, passion, talent, pretty much all of the above. I went into this book completely unaware that it was going to be so music-focused. When I finally realized it, I also noticed the cover actually resembles an album or vinyl sleeve. Makes sense in hindsight.

The biggest plot twist for me was the hotel scene. Was I surprised they got together? Kind of, yeah. Probably because the book is only told from Percy’s point of view, and Joe never really showed any romantic interest in her, at least nothing beyond friendship. He even made it clear the night after his first show, didn’t he? And honestly, the complete disregard for Percy’s serious relationship, plus Joe hiding his own relationship(s), felt like a major dick move.

There were a lot of characters in this book—some important, some forgettable, some I skimmed through—but I did like that Percy (and Joe, I guess) eventually mended things with Zoe. I’ll admit I still don’t fully understand how their fallout even happened. I reread that part several times. But Zoe was good to her, even from the start.

Overall, aside from not being interested in the technical side of music (probably because I just couldn’t relate), I’d say the writing was definitely immersive, and the ending was genuinely satisfying.

Dear Future Me,

I guess we’re keeping up with tradition. Another year, another letter to myself. Consider this my annual time capsule.

Today might not be the best day to be doing this. Mentally,,, it hasn’t been great. But I’ll try to focus on the positives.

Let’s rip the bandage off: Mother died.
I’m not sure I want to get into it. It’s etched in my mind anyway, and I’m sure a year from now, I’ll still remember it vividly. It was sudden, yet expected. Quick, fast, and every synonym that means the same.

It’s been seven months. I’ve been coping. Things are… okay. I think about it often, though not as painfully as before. Nights don’t feel heavy anymore. It’s the small moments that hit — the urge to tell her something and realizing I can’t.

Sometimes, I feel guilty for not thinking about her as much as I used to. Seven months isn’t that long, and yet I feel fine. And I shouldn’t, right? But things are fine. I almost have to convince myself that I shouldn’t be fine.

It’s also been a while since anyone’s asked how I’m really doing. One of my friends even forgot that she passed this year. I don’t talk about my grief publicly anymore; it doesn’t feel comfortable. Instead, I joke about it. And honestly? I think I’m hilarious as hell.

Since this letter is meant for me, I’ll say it: ever since her death, I’ve noticed I lack empathy. I just can’t seem to put myself in the shoes of people who’ve gone through anything less than I have. It’s unfair, I know. But I can’t help it. It feels like empathy was a switch, and on March 19th, it got turned off.

Anywayyyy moving on.
Good news: I’m still employed. Two years in the same job now. I don’t have my second job anymore, so yes, still broke but grateful nonetheless. The job is actually perfect. A few cons here and there, but overall, I’m lucky.

And now, for my favorite part of these letters: the love life update.
Still the same. No real progress. I’m talking to someone at the moment, but honestly, I don’t see it going anywhere.

My friends, though, they’ve been the real love of my life this year. It’s been hard, but I think the reason I’ve managed to feel okay this soon, even after everything, is because of them.

That’s about it. See you again next year.

With love,
Me.

Six months ago today my world shattered — and it was never pieced back together. I have laughed. I have cried. I have lived since then, but I remain broken all the same. Not a day passes when my mother doesn’t cross my mind. Some might call it an exaggeration, especially with so much else going on in my life, who would have the time? but every waking moment, every breath I take, every tiny thing that happens to me, for a split 0.03 seconds I want to tell her. In those milliseconds the thought vanishes, reminding me that I can’t.

I used to be a firm believer in “this too shall pass.” Every heartbreak, every streak of bad luck — six months tops, I’d tell myself. And here I am, six months later, writing and admitting that this one is different. It’s been six months since I felt like I lost my life, and oh, what an ache — what a pain — to keep going. Six months since I’ve hoped each day to be reunited with her. Six months since boys stopped occupying my mind. Six months since every petty problem revealed itself as just that: petty.

It’s been six months since I learned what true heartbreak means.

I used to think phrases like "I see you in everyone I meet" or "I see you in strangers on the street" were ridiculous. Overly romantic. Unreal. I believed that once you got over someone, that was it — you were either done or still hopelessly stuck. I didn’t believe in the in-between.

But after I met you, I realized how wrong I was.

This isn’t meant to be some poetic declaration. There’s no deeper meaning hidden between the lines. It’s just... honest. And maybe that’s why I felt the need to write it down.

This feeling is foreign to me. It doesn’t hurt, and it doesn’t interfere with my life. But I have to admit — sometimes, when I meet someone new, you come to mind. Not because they are you, or even like you in any significant way. Sometimes it’s as small as the curve of their lips, the way they smile. Sometimes — and this is strange to even say — it’s something as mundane as the shape of their fingernails.

Not everyone reminds me of you. But enough do that I’ve noticed a pattern. And if this were some kind of strange, silent competition — you'd be winning.

October 29th, 2024

Hey, it’s me from 2024. Exactly a year after everything you went through in 2023. Honestly, it feels surreal looking back. I believed we'd never get out of that state — yet here we are, a year later, and it really doesn’t matter anymore.

A lot has changed, but some things remain the same.

First off: We’re no longer unemployed! In fact, we have two jobs now — crazy, right? After how things fell apart last year, we landed our first job in November. And it’s remote! No more waking up at 4:30 AM, dragging ourselves out of bed, or dreading every workday. Now, we actually love what we do, and the pay? Beyond what we imagined. We're into copywriting and branding now, which is wild, considering all we knew before was SEO. Two remote jobs with companies based in Singapore — who would’ve thought we’d end up here?

As for love, well, not much has changed. And strangely, we’re okay with that. We’ve realized that life is about so much more. Sure, there are still moments of loneliness, but we’ve learned that it’s better to be at peace on our own than to feel lonely with someone else. What happened last year? Yeah, it was tough, but today it barely stings.

Honestly, we’re more ourselves now — or maybe even better. The confidence, the peace, the faith — they’ve come back. It was all part of God’s plan, and we see that clearly now.

This year has also been about setting boundaries — learning when to say no, knowing what drains us, and protecting our peace. It’s been enlightening, even if some realizations were hard to swallow. But deep down, we knew these lessons were coming.

Oh, and we finally left the country! Sure, it was for work, but still, it’s something we’ve never done before.

Overall, it’s been a good year. Not perfect, but meaningful. I can’t wait to revisit this letter next year. Whatever happens, this is proof that things do get better — no matter how dark it feels in the moment.

With love,

You from 2024

In another life, corporate life feels peaceful. Mornings are calm as you get ready, breathing in the fresh air. The first touch of sunlight accompanies your commute, setting the tone for the day ahead. In this life, work isn't a burden—it's fulfilling. You walk into a job you enjoy, surrounded by the familiar clicking of keyboards and the steady hum of colleagues in their element. Laughter echoes over lunch, friendships form over shared jokes, and harmless gossip fills the air by the coffee machine at 3 p.m.

In another life, corporate life doesn’t drain your soul. You leave on time, guilt-free, with no lingering obligations. You come home tired, but satisfied—ready to embrace tomorrow with anticipation. There are no blaring alarms, no endless traffic jams that leave your body aching. No overbearing middle management watching your every move. No burnout.

In another life, corporate life isn’t so bad.

I ache for things I have no memory of, perhaps memories from a life lived elsewhere. Like gathering with a circle of friends in my late twenties, those who meet every few months, who remind me of life's simple joys and the truth that we never truly outgrow one another. I yearn for a work-life so balanced it doesn't crush my spirit, where choosing between mental health and the world outside isn’t a daily struggle. I dream of stepping out my door with purpose, with the quiet thrill of wanting to be somewhere. Instead, I’m left with vague memories that feel borrowed from another lifetime, while in this one, I stand alone, surrounded by the absence of what I crave.

Some days, imposter syndrome feels all too real. Sometimes, I’m convinced I have it; other days, I wonder if it’s just another buzzword I picked up. I feel like a fool, a fake, a fraud — take your pick. Or maybe I’m just unwell. Either way, I’m not sure who I am anymore — or maybe I never knew. Or was I just lying to myself again? I’ve forgotten what it feels like to write, even though I do it every day... or do I just force myself to? I don’t even know what I like or dislike anymore, but my friends seem to remember for me. At least, that’s what I tell them. At least I have my hobbies, or are they just routines I’m stuck in? I don’t know anymore. But I do have people who love me, or at least the ones I convince myself do.

There are days when the dawn's light kisses my skin just right, infusing me with the warmth of a world waiting to be embraced. On those days, friendships bloom, hobbies flourish, meals are savored, and chores are effortlessly conquered. My gaze lifts to the sky, filled with gratitude for the life I lead and the person I am.

But then there are days when darkness reigns. Sometimes it's a tempest of hate, other times a deluge of sadness. These emotions rise without warning, like a cliffhanger with no resolution. Publicly displaying this turmoil would only reveal a mind with loose screws, so I keep it hidden. On such days, nothing ventures beyond the door. Clothes remain stained with yesterday's air, friends are neglected, meals are hastily assembled. I am paralyzed, unable to move beyond the overwhelming waves, simply hoping to remain unseen until the storm passes.

I've genuinely been at peace. From the bottom of my heart, I can say that without any signs of dishonesty. However, a creeping feeling of sadness appears when I least expect it, even in my most ecstatic moments. It's like a tiny dot on my heart that never goes away.

Today wasn't exactly what I'd call a stellar day. It wasn't necessarily bad either, just a bit lackluster, I suppose. Overall, life's been treating me well, and I'm genuinely grateful; there's nothing significant to gripe about, really. Yet, like most people, I find myself always yearning for more, and for that, I apologize. I tend to only put pen to paper when things feel rough, so I'm not entirely sure what's brought me here to vent. Work's going smoothly, I've been spending time with friends, indulging in hobbies, and managing my finances. I handle the usual tasks someone my age would. But amidst it all, there's the constant companion of loneliness.

Loneliness has been a steadfast companion throughout my journey. It doesn't matter how much money I have or how many friends surround me; it persists. I wish I could banish it, truly. Yet, no matter what I try, it lingers. I suppose I'm writing to make a mark on my own life, a sort of checkpoint to reflect upon later. I hope that things will change, that the future will bring something different. Whatever it may be, good or bad, I hope it aligns with the desires of my present self.
